ABOUT THE DANCE FILM ‘REFUGE’
Set 100 years in the future, REFUGE contemplates a radically changed world after environmental and technological collapse. The world’s citizens have become climate nomads forced to leave their homes in search of new places where they can find shelter, food, water, and safety.

Beyond the dangerous world of excessive daytime temperatures, weather disruptions like torrential rain and flood events, and burning forests, the nomads must also contend with the digital detritus of the past. In the year 2052, humans took a leap into the future and elected to install brain interfaces to connect their individual brains to the information cloud. Their brains quickly hacked this cyborg advancement, which brought on rapid advancement, but also accelerated decay of an intended benevolent system.

While this cyborg age accelerated humans’ potential and cerebral proficiency, it wasn’t enough to win the race against time with a changing climate. Eventually, humans were overcome by the planet’s ever increasing harshness, and all of the cyborg advancements collapsed. Now in 2122, humans’ are overwhelmed by the unprecedented amount of digital detritus of civilization, as it washes across and connects with their consciousness in random digital storms.

In this changed world, the nomads can only travel by night, wearing hoods to shield them from the errant satellites still signaling to the digital implants within their brains. When the nomads meet other nomadic travelers, the increasingly harsh world strains their sense of safety and trust with each other. This battle will be won by mother nature.

PRODUCTION NOTES
REFUGE is performed by five principal dancers, supported by an ensemble of 20 extras. The film will be skillfully shot by an experienced cinematic crew, using an anamorphic framing. The creative intention is to let the film breathe, at scale, to reinforce the epicness and tension of the material. The cinematic approach will draw inspiration from the contemplative style of Kurasawa, and the visual tension of Tarkovsky.

WARDROBE NOTES for EXTRAS

Wardrobe:
Featured extras and extras will be asked to provide their own wardrobe. Expect a costume review, so bring several changes of clothes. A pair of jeans (not your best), a t-shirt or loose shirt, a sweat shirt or light jacket, old hiking shoes or tennis shoes, and a back pack that you can stuff. Remember you are climate nomads. Your clothes don’t need to be new or fancy. The older the better, like you packed in a hurry. We will be augmenting your costumes with other accessories.
